Evapo-Rust™ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Q: How long will Evapo-Rust™ last, and how many times can it be re-used?
A: Evapo-Rust™ has an indefinite shelf life. The product can be re-used until its effectiveness starts to wear off. In general, one (1) gallon of Evapo-Rust™ will remove ½ pound of pure dry rust, which equates to approximately 300 pounds of moderately rusted steel. Since rust is 1/17th the weight of iron, the workload is quite substantial.
In terms of a degradation curve, Evapo-Rust ™ has a specific gravity of 1.042 when the solution is fresh. After repeated uses, the solution will darken and start to lose its effectiveness. Once the solution reaches a specific gravity of 1.08, the solution will no longer be effective and should be replaced.

Q: Is Evapo-Rust™ safe to transport?
A: Evapo-Rust™ is non-hazardous and ships by Postal, Courier, or regular Freight (Shipping Class 55 in the USA).

Q: What size containers are used for packaging Evapo-Rust™?
A: For our wholesale customers, Evapo-Rust™ is available in either a 208 Liter (55 US gallon) drum or a 1,040 Liter (275 US gallon) Tote. One 208 Liter drum weighs approximately 600 pounds.

Q: Does Evapo-Rust™ work under heavy rusting conditions?
A: Yes, Evapo-Rust™ will remove heavy rusting. The soaking process will require more time with heavy rust to allow the solution to fully penetrate the rusted surface. Heavy rust is defined as rust that is 5mm or deeper.

Q: After soaking metal in Evapo-Rust™, is any further treatment required?
A: No, no further treatment is required once the rust has been removed with Evapo-Rust™. In some cases, residual rust may still be embedded in the metal (pits, crevices) after the initial soaking. In this case, rinse the metal with water and re-soak in Evapo-Rust™. All residual rust will be removed from these hard to reach places.

Q: Does Evapo-Rust™ have rust inhibiting characteristics?
A: Yes, after the rust has been removed with Evapo-Rust™ and the metal has dried, a second soaking in Evapo-Rust™ will inhibit rust from reforming for up to six (6) weeks. This alleviates the need to add other rust inhibitive coatings for shipping that will have to be removed once the product is delivered.

Q: Is there any stress change to the steel after treatment with Evapo-Rust™?
A: There will be no stress change in the metal due to treatment with Evapo-Rust™. The only change that will occur will be rust damage that was caused prior to any treatment with Evapo-Rust™.

Q: If the steel has a coating, will the coating be damaged by using Evapo-Rust™?
A: No, Evapo-Rust™ will not damage any coatings or plating material, and can even be used on painted surfaces without damaging most paints. Evapo-Rust™ only attacks the rust. One exception is zinc coatings, which can be removed by prolonged exposure to Evapo-Rust™.

Q: What is the evaporation rate for Evapo-Rust™?
A: The evaporation rate for Evapo-Rust™ is the same as the evaporation rate for water.

Q: Is there any documentation substantiating that this product is hazard free, environmentally friendly, and bio-degradable?
A: Yes, a “Material Safety Data Sheet” is on file with the U. S. Government. In addition, an independent laboratory has performed tests on the product and verified its safety features. Evapo-Rust™ has received numerous industry awards, such as Cleaning Technology Magazine’s “Outstanding Technology in Industrial Cleaning” award and R&D Magazine’s “Top 100 Technologies” award (in the Environmental category). Evapo-Rust™ is also approved for use by the U. S. Military. Evapo-Rust™ was nominated for the EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in 2005. Further information on the safety of Evapo-Rust™ can be provided upon request.

Q: How do I dispose of the spent solution?
A: The product can be disposed of in the local sewer system in neat form. When Evapo-Rust™ is spent, only the chelated iron content of the solution will dictate how it can be disposed of. In most cases, it can be dumped directly into the city sewer system. Check with your local Municipality for any specific disposal requirements. The pH of Evapo-Rust™ is 6.1. The pH of the spent solution will vary from 6.1 to 7.0, which means there is no need to neutralize the already neutral solution. The spent solution makes a great fertilizer. Mix the spent solution 10:1 with tap water and apply to the soil.
